IGARASSU AND ISLE OF ITAMARACÁ - PERNAMBUCO

Located 30 kilometers from Recife, Igarassu is the commencement of the history of Pernambuco, having received, in 1535, the Portuguese delegation that transported the Donatário (donee) of the Capitania (country subdivision), Duarte Coelho Pereira.Streets of irregular stones, beautiful religious buildings and a simple merge of small houses recall the past of the city, marked by the participation in libertarian struggles and periods of economic progress resulting from the cultivation of sugar cane.The itinerary includes visits to the Church of Saints Cosme and Damião, the oldest Catholic church in the lands of Brazil, dated of 1535, and the Convent of St. Antonio, representative art gallery housing the colonial phase.On our way to the island of Itamaracá, we will go through Itapissuma, a small village known as the "Land of the Crustaceans," beautifully situated on the banks of the Canal de Santa Cruz.Crossing the Getúlio Vargas Bridge, we shall arrive to the island, with its beaches of quiet waters, historic monuments and the sweet flavor of the many tropical fruit and the "roletes de cana" (roller of sugar cane).It's time to visit the Engenho São João, the very first steam engine in the country. The Center for Preservation of the Peixe Boi Marinho (Manatee, cold-blooded aquatic mammal with fins also known as "sea cows"), with thematic exhibition and huge aquariums where the pups are ready to return to their natural habitat, and Fort Orange, primitive Dutch construction rebuilt in stone and lime by the Portuguese in the year 1654.The location is special: At the seashore, opposite to the islet of Coroa do Avião (Crown of the Airplane), researching point for the migratory birds and tourist spot, in its surroundings a number of popular bars, besides the providing of equipment and services for the practice of leisure sailing.
